Isakson as "a threat to the unborn"
Abortion foes target Isakson
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - Jim Tharpe:
An anti-abortion group that wields clout with the Republican Party's most conservative wing took a shot at Republican U.S. Senate candidate Johnny Isakson on Monday.
The political arm of Georgia Right to Life endorsed both U.S. Rep. Mac Collins and ...Herman Cain in the race for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate.
The endorsements are a slap at Isakson.
"It's very clear we are promoting these two candidates in order to eliminate pro-abortion Johnny Isakson," said Dan Becker, director of Georgia Right to Life's political action committee.
The anti-abortion group will send its endorsements to 50,000 Georgians in a newsletter.
Becker said his organization, which he said has identified 225,000 anti-abortion households in Georgia, was displeased with Isakson's recent vote to permit self-funded abortions on overseas military bases.
He said Isakson cast that vote while emphasizing his anti-abortion votes in campaign appearances.
"We are very definitely going after Johnny Isakson for the duplicity of these statements," Becker declared. "We find a large inconsistency between what he is saying to our constituency and our donors and what he is doing."
Campaign manager Chris Carr said Isakson's position on abortion is in accord with National Right to Life on 23 of 24 critical issues and that Isakson has a 92 percent rating with the Christian Coalition.
Collins, in accepting the endorsement, pledged to "continue my 100 percent pro-life record" if he is elected to the Senate, while Cain characterized Isakson as "a threat to the unborn."
Becker said exit polls show that about 6 percent of Georgians cast ballots based solely on a candidate's stand on abortion.
"They're single-issue voters, and this is a significant number," Becker said. "It's more than the margin of victory in most elections."
