Don Schanche Jr.: Vice President Cheney issued a glowing endorsement of Republican congressional candidate Calder Clay III and gave a pep talk to the party faithful Thursday during a brief campaign stop in Macon.
"The president and I are proud to stand with him today, and look forward to working with him for a good many years to come," Cheney told a crowd that paid at least $500 apiece for a chance to see the nation's second-in-command up close at the Wilson Convention Center.
Clay estimated that he came close to his fund-raising goal of $150,000. More than 120 supporters were on hand.
Clay, 46, faces a rematch with Democrat Jim Marshall, 56, who managed a narrow victory for the congressional seat two years ago. Neither man has opposition in the July 20 primary. Voters will make their choice Nov. 2.
Cheney also visited Middle Georgia to campaign for Clay during the 2002 race.
"I was proud to campaign with Calder two years ago," Cheney said. "He ran a tough, smart race and came very close to victory. He's going to run even harder this year, and the outcome is going to be different."
Frequently interrupted by applause, Cheney said Clay is needed in Congress to support the Bush administration's policies abroad and at home.
Cheney recounted a list of recent achievements in the war on terrorism, including the formal transfer of sovereignty to the new Iraqi government and the beginnings of an Iraqi prosecution against former dictator Saddam Hussein.
The longest burst of applause followed Cheney's assertion, "The United States will never seek a permission slip to defend the security of our country."
In an interview after Cheney's speech, Clay listed several points on which he differs with his opponent.
The biggest difference, he said: "My opponent voted 73 percent of the time with Nancy Pelosi ... That's a failing grade in Middle Georgia, and we'll be pointing that out."
Pelosi, a California representative and House Minority Leader, is "the most liberal member of Congress," Clay said.
